Christmas is the time of year we are supposed to relax, celebrate and enjoy each other’s company. Yet, our lives at this time of year become more fast paced. We worry about buying the right gifts for our loved ones, gifts that they will love. So, we spend hours on end, standing in line either waiting to enter a store or to pay for the things we plan to give away for gifts. Then, there are the Christmas parties we are required to attend. Christmas parties are a ton of fun, but they can also be a sort of stress, especially when you’re the one hosting the party.
Last, but certainly not least, we must factor in our work schedules. Through the gift shopping and celebrating, life must go on. We must make money in order to make Christmas complete.
Since when has Christmas become defined by commercialism? Since when do our lives during the Christmas season become so fast paced that we forget about the true meaning of Christmas?
Christmas is a time to celebrate the winter solstice, but most importantly, it is a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Was Jesus actually born on December 25th? Evidence suggests that he was born sometime in the Spring. Yet, the Catholic Church has made December 25th the official date of Christmas celebration because this event brightens the darkest and coldest season of the year.
Regardless, Christmas was established for us to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but also to share in each other’s company. It is a time for us to reflect on the significance of Christmas and to give thanks for our blessings. It is also a time for us to reinforce the concept of giving, not only to each other, but to those who are less fortunate. Above all else, it is a time to acknowledge Christ’s sacrifice for us.
If we could all tame the madness that surrounds the Christmas holiday, we would find much more enjoyment in it.
